about

Emotion Wave are privileged to be releasing this EP from Slobject. aka Chris Buckley - part of the same musical family dynasty that includes his brother Stephen, aka Polypores.

Here's a bit of background on Chris, in his own words...

//

Q: Where are you from and where are you based now?
A: Born in Lancaster, grew up in the north west, I have lived in the north east for 10 years.

Q: When did your interest in music start, and when did you start making music?
A: I’ve always loved music, I was lucky enough to have a family that really valued music. In particular my older brother who I always looked up to and still do. He was a great music guide for me growing up.
I was 15 when I started to self learn the guitar. From that point on I was in bands and wrote some of my own songs etc. So that’s where it started really.

Q: Who would you say are your main influences, any particular artists or albums etc that have guided you in any way?
A: These days I would say one of my main influences is a Japanese artist called ‘Kawatin’. That guy is a genius and he makes beautiful music. But honestly I listen to all sorts, lots of jazz, hip hop, indie, rock, metal, classical and straight up pop music! I think in a way it probably all ends up influencing my music somehow.

Q: What are you looking for when making or listening to music?
A: I guess the ‘slobject’ stuff started a couple of years ago. It’s just basically me doing electronic music on my own. Something that I’ve dabbled with for a long time but never really had the confidence to fully commit to. It’s now an obsession and I still feel like I’m constantly learning and hopefully improving.

Q: Tell us about how Slobject. came into being
A: I don’t have a set structure for a creative process, it changes every time. Sometimes I start with some drums, or sometimes I’m inspired by playing some piano, it’s just whatever triggers some inspiration really. I do like to have something visual going on silently in the background while I make music. I find anime or something sci-fi usually works well.

Q: What's your usual creative process, what sort of setup do you normally work with - any reasons for using this kind of setup?
A: My current set up is relatively simple. Mostly because I don’t have much money. But as everyone says limitation is good for creativity and I find that to be true. My brother introduced me to the digitakt and that’s been a game changer for me. It just seems to really fit perfectly with how I work. I’ll usually come up with the drums and percussive elements on there and then try layering different synth sounds with my minilogue XD.

I also like to mess with vocal samples which I predominantly use my phone for.
